There are two types of collectors in the world of action figure collecting!

There are those who open up their figures, freeing them from their tiny little plastic prisons and dispose of the packaging and there are those who keep each figure mint in its pack, preserving its just brought look.

If you are like me then you go for the latter due to the trill of seeing your figures complete in packaging, however by opting for this option you are faced with a dilemma... what is the best way to package and store your collection safely?

Some may say, well why not just open them and be done with it, but if that is out of the question then make sure you follow this guide!

In this tutorial I am going to share with you a method I use to store my Doctor Who action figures in their packaging which maximizes the space available to me while preserving my figures in tip top condition. I have used this method for many years and still to this day follow the same procedure when packaging up my collection.

This simple guide can be followed to package and store all types of individually packed Doctor Who action figures, whether it be the clamshell type packaging to the classic packaging. It is recommended however to keep each packaging type together in order to achieve the best results.

Have fun :) !

 The Guide

Step 1

Gather and set out the following pieces of equipment on your clear workspace:

  • A large box - Ideally measuring approx. D: 28cm H: 29cm W: 37cm
  • A roll of kitchen towel.
  • Parcel Tape / Sticky Tape
  • Sticky Labels
    A Pen

Step 2

Grab your cardboard box and assemble if necessary.

Make sure it is 100% dry and not damp if previously been stored in a cool environment.

Step 3

Turn your box upside down and seal the bottom join with tape.

Get your sticky tape or parcel tape and run a full strip across the bottom. Repeat this twice, overlapping the first strip either side.
By sealing the box you will keep out any potential moisture.

Step 4

Turn your box back over and tear off 4 pieces of kitchen towel.
Fold over and line the bottom of the box, covering any gaps - as shown below.

DO NOT: Do not use newspaper instead of kitchen towel, Overtime newspaper ages and discolors. Newspaper could damage the packing leaving discoloration and ink marks.

Step 5

It is time to start packing your figures. In order to get the best results and maximize space, this must be done carefully and at a layer at a time.

First of all, place one figure towards right hand side of the box, laying it flat and facing up. On the opposite side face down and reverse another action figure with a similar sized TARDIS window depth. See picture below for further guidance.

Step 6

Pack out any gaps with rolled/scrunched up kitchen towel. Make sure the figure is surrounded so it can not move if shook from side to side.

Step 7

Once each layer is complete, tear off 2 to 4 sheets of kitchen towel and lay over the top of the figures. If you have sized up your figures correctly, you should have a flat surface to build up your next layer.

Step 8

Repeat Steps 5 to 7 for each layer until your box is full - Depending on the size of the figures TARDIS Window, you should have around 3 to 4 layers of figures.

DO NOT: Do not overfill your box, you will only damage your figures packing when sealing and stacking.

Step 9

If you have a gap at the top of your box, pack out with kitchen towel until full.

Step 10

Fold down the flaps of your box and seal with one line of sticky tape or parcel tape. Repeat the process as you did when sealing the bottom of your box - making sure you overlap each piece off tape.

Label your box! - Trust me you will thank me for this when you come to look for that certain action figure in weeks, months, years to come and hey presto, one box of safely packaged figures!

Step 11

When looking for a place to store your action figures, find a place which is cool and dry. Lofts and garages are OK, however make sure they maintain near to a regular room temperature.

DO NOT: Do not store near any heat or damp sources or in an environment which fluctuates constantly in temperature.

When stacking your boxes, do not stack one directly on top of another as seen in the left hand picture below. Stacking this way will increase pressure on the lower boxes which may crush under the weight.

Spread the weight when stacking. Stack in a similar fashion as demonstrated in the right hand diagram below.

Step 12

Repeat if required.
