The new style all plastic 'clamshell' packaging adopted by Character Options is now hitting store shelves nationwide, but how do you open it and keep the packaging without ripping it to shreds?

In reality it couldn't be easier to open, and in my opinion the new packaging is a great improvement on the card and plastic design..

For those of us who are not C9 (Near Mint) fanatics, we can keep the figure in the new blister pack and enjoy that wonderful new style packaging design, displaying them in their bubbles... BUT!... we can still remove the action figure from the bubble. The new style packaging has been absolutely superbly designed to reduce waste and for those of us who want to remove our figures, it's even easier to create an invisible flap to remove them.

The new packaging design has removed the over hangs which existed in the old style cards and which required you to squeeze and distort the figure tray as you pulled and slid it free of its bubble and backing card. This new design all but eliminates the wear and tear which, after repeated removals, started to cause the heat welded bubble to separate from, and mark, the old style backing card.

The process is still ostensibly the same. You simply cut a flap/door in the plastic bubble allowing you to slide the figure tray and it's contents (the action figure!) out of the outer bubble packing without destroying the packaging as you would if you used scissors or a sharp knife to slice, or cut away the outer clamshell plastic.

I have been collecting figures since 1977 (please don't ask how many lines, I'll have a coronary!) and since the early 1990's this is how I collect and enjoy my figure collection. I buy figures to enjoy, I love a really good sculpt/paint job on a figure, I don't intend to resell them in the future, or consider them an investment. Therefore this method allows me to enjoy figures on their cards, but display them loose if I choose.

Best of both worlds !

Getting Ready

You can do this with most carded action figures, both card and bubble or all plastic clamshell packaging.

However, the key thing to do is identify the optimum position to create the flap, allowing you to slide out the tray without it catching on any part of the outer bubble - this will usually be the widest elevation of the packaging.. So for example you wouldn't chose the top of the bubble of a Doctor Who figure as the wider pointy part of the tray where the Logo is displayed would not slide out.

New Figures ! Hurrah !

Step 1

Select your figure and work out where you'll cut the flap

Location of cutting lines and hinge

Step 2

Using the sharpest knife you can (I usually use a surgical scalpel blade - If you are underage you may need adult supervision - don't blame me for missing body parts or bloodstained action figures!) You will need to cut down the edge of the plastic bubble.

Cutting along the flap seams on the right hand side.

Slip the point of the blade through the plastic of the outer bubble only and then slice down through the plastic of the outer bubble along the first seam of the flap.

Step 3

When you get to the bottom of the first seam remove the knife, change the cutting angle so that the side of the blade is parallel to the card insert and cut the outer bubble just above the card insert, so as not to damage it.

Cutting along the bottom of the flap & left hand side.

Step 4

Once you have reached the end of the seam on the clamshell, again remove the scalpel, and start to cut down the final seam that will form the side of the flap - making sure that you are only cutting the outer bubble, not the figure tray or card insert inside.

Step 5

You should now be able to lift the flap of the outer bubble up revealing the action figure tray inside.

Lift the flap you have created.

Step 6

You should now be able to slide out the action figure tray and it's contents

Removing the internal figure tray

Step 7

On the old style Doctor Who Figures the part of the Inner Action Figure tray which lays below the name of the figure, used to catch on the recessed part of the outer bubble. The new clamshell packaging doesn't have this overhang so it is much easier to remove the figure tray without any overhang to catch the internal figure tray.

Untwisting the retaining wire twists

Step 8

Un wind the wire retaining ties which hold the figure in the try and release that figure ! (Cue the song... "Born Free, as free as the wind blows")

Remove figure and accessories.

Step 9

So long as you are careful when replacing or removing the inner plastic figure tray into it's bubble, you should be able to remove the action figure as many times as you like.

Figures removed from packaging which is left intact & Martha returned to packaging.
Note not the retaining wire is removed but the figure appears mint in card

See, Jack and Martha are free, and unless you inspect the carded figure closely you wouldn't know it had been opened!

Enjoy your action figures!
